Our client (UFO Moviez), one of the largest digital cinema providers in India, was using an MPEG-4 based video encoder for the movies released on the big screens. They were not satisfied with the encoded content quality and wanted to improve it. As their playback system was deployed at numerous cinema halls throughout the country, they did not want to change the supported playback resolution and bit-rate. They approached Venera to analyze their encoding quality and suggest possible improvements. This was a tricky problem to solve, given the constraints posed by the situation. As a first step we decided to analyze their content to see if any improvement in the video quality was at all possible. Using our video analysis software, we examined the content for various parameters like quantization, PSNR, bit-distribution, frame-type distribution etc to understand the behavior of their encoder and find possible ways to improve the video quality. Within two weeks the analysis team was able to figure out reasons for the information loss and identified concrete ways to improve the video quality. These included advanced encoder parameter control than supported by their encoder and improved video preprocessing with minimum possible loss of information. Satisfied by the analysis report, the client asked us to implement suggested methods to improve the video quality. We offered them two possible approaches; either enhance their existing encoder or customize Venera’s encoder to fit into their existing workflow.
The client decided to use Venera’s encoder. We enhanced and integrated our MPEG-4 encoder solution into their existing system. As part of our offering we provided them: - Enhanced encoder parameter control
- High quality video pre-processing filters
- Video training for superior use of encoder parameters
Advanced encoder parameters gave better control over quantization, macro-block types, scene change sensitivity and motion vector search range. The new video pre-processing filters reduced noise while maintaining the content sharpness. Multiple filters were implemented to cater to different types of video content. Benefits for Client: - High quality video content
- Better understanding of video encoding
- Improved customer satisfaction
